THE MAKEOVER: YOUR CLOSET
While you don't need to spend every weekend color-coding your hangers, you should keep your closet well-organized by instituting overhauls at the beginning of winter and summer. Use these opportunities not only to spruce up your closet but to store seasonal items and weed out the ones you no longer wear.
Storage: Before packing clothes away for a few months, make sure they're cleaned properly. Even if you wore a shirt only once, the faintest hint of perspiration can attract moths and lead to underarm discoloration months later. Once they are washed or dry-cleaned, store your clothes in canvas bags or cedar boxes, which—unlike the plastic bags from the dry cleaner—allow ventilation.
Clearing Out: If you're still holding on to a flannel shirt from freshman year, ask yourself the following: Have I worn it within the past two years? Does it fit? Does it look good on me? If you answered no twice, dump the item and move on. You can take your old button-downs to the Salvation Army or a clothing drop-off, or you can put in a little more effort and sell your old Prada coat to a consignment shop or on eBay.
THE SEASONLESS CHECKLIST
When it comes to your year-round wardrobe, stick with colors like tan, dove gray, and navy. For fabrics, choose lightweight wools, medium-weight cottons, and silk-cotton blends.
