The Must-Have Haircut

You don't have to resign yourself to the standard short back and sides every time you sit in a stylist's chair. This of-the-moment cut that Dolce & Gabbana introduced at its spring/summer 2009 runway show will make you look well-groomed—but not like every other guy in the office. Kayleen Schaefer

What It Is: An updated version of the brush cut that had its heyday in the fifties. "It's clean and gentlemanly," says stylist Eugene Souleiman, who created the look for Dolce & Gabbana. The difference is that the top isn't slicked back, like James Stewart wore it, but pulled up and twisted away from the face. "If the top is kept solid," says Tommy Buckett, a stylist at Sally Hershberger in New York, "it will have a dated, barbershop feel to it."

How To Ask For It: Tell your stylist you want the sides and back of your hair sheared to about a quarter of an inch. "You can't have any hair hanging over the ears," says Stephane André, a stylist at Frédéric Fekkai Fifth Avenue in New York. On top you should have at least one inch, and the bangs should be long enough to be pushed back—but if you can pull them to the tip of your nose, they're too long. Get a trim every six to eight weeks.

How To Style It: Apply a pomade or cream to damp or dry hair. Start from the back of the head and push the product forward, distributing it evenly. Then smooth down the sides and the back and push the top forward. Pull the bangs up and twist them back and to the left. It's quick, says Diana Schmidtke, a Los Angeles stylist who's worked on George Clooney and Jake Gyllenhaal: "If you spend more than four minutes styling it, you're doing it wrong."
