Charnett Moffett, The Art of Improvisation [Motema]
Our rating: 4 out of a possible 5
![]()
One of jazz's top instrumentalists, Moffett is a hypnotic performer. Playing the upright and the electric bass and accompanied only by piano and drums, he mesmerizes with a series of propulsive minimalist grooves (like "Moses" and "The Story") before firing up an acidy version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" that would've made Jimi Hendrix weep. Matt Hendrickson
Moffett performs his rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
