The Other Miami

Once just a perfunctory stop for interior decorators in search of high-end modern furnishings, Miami's unassuming Design District has emerged as a home for upscale boutiques and unpretentious restaurants. A quick drive from South Beach, the area is a grown-up, low-key alternative to its louder, tackier neighbor across the bay. Alicia Zuckerman

Shop owner Karen Quinones, another South Beach transplant, offers a sharp mix of established labels like Etro, Band of Outsiders, and Dsquared, along with up-and-comers like Mason's, Eden, and Conference of Birds. Perfect for those days when a mesh T-shirt and Speedo just aren't enough. [161 NE 40th St., 305-576-0056;]

When tastemaker (and Bottega Veneta creative director) Tomas Maier picked up and moved out of South Beach, many followed. The German designer's eponymous lifestyle emporium, which carries Carthusia men's fragrances, handmade Panama hats, and rare design books, is a monument to high-end editing. 3. Michael's Genuine Food & Drink
Most of the menu items at Michael Schwartz's neighborhood eatery are cooked in a wood-fired brick oven, infusing dishes like Brussels sprouts, whole Vidalia onions, porterhouse steak, and grouper with deep and distinct flavor. The unique chocolate cremoso dessert combines the dark stuff with olive oil and sea salt, and the saffron panna cotta is a little Mumbai in the heart of Miami. [130 NE 40th St., 305-573-5550;]

4. Marni
The Italian label's Miami outpost is a sleek nod to The Jetsons in a neighborhood dominated by Art Deco. Inside, Marni's signature cropped pants, oversize shirts, and unconventional bags add a shot of irony to traditional menswear. [3930 NE 2nd Ave., 305-764-3357;]

If you need to get your body beach-ready, you might as well do it in style. The minimalist boutique carries SLVR, Adidas' new eco-friendly casual collection, along with the shoe giant's sporty Yohji Yamamoto label. [150 NE 40th St., 305-573-1603;]
