47. How to Get a Great Haircut: Part 4
How close can you crop your hair?
The No. 4 blade guard on the barber's clippers leaves your hair about half an inch long, giving your head a smooth, shaved look without the sheen. Your aesthetic inspiration: Wentworth Miller in Prison Break, not Jake Gyllenhaal in Jarhead. Note: Unless your scalp is exquisitely shaped, a shaved head will only call attention to what's missing if your hairline is receding. It's better to go as short as you can—stop when you get uncomfortable—keeping the sides closely cropped and the top no longer than an inch. An advantage of the buzz cut is that you can do touch-ups between trims yourself. Run the clippers (Wahl makes a good pair) up from your sideburns and the back of your neck—still using the No. 4—but don't touch the hair on the crown of the head.
