The Complete Guide to Tipping Your Hairstylist

After you've survived a haircut, there's one more hurdle: deciding how much to tip. For most guys, tipping hairstylists isn't as second-nature and standardized as, say, tipping waiters. But Joey Argeras, a stylist at Bumble and bumble, says it's not any more complicated. "It's the same as eating out," she says. "A 20 percent tip is great." You can either put the cash in one of the envelopes at the register—and sign your name or not—or simply give it to your stylist. 'It's fine to hand it to your stylist and say 'Thank you,' " Argeras says. You should also tip the person who shampoos your hair, from $2 to $5. "Men are usually at the shampoo bowl twice, once before the cut and once after, so they should usually give at least $5," Argeras says. If the hairstylist has an assistant, it's not necessary to tip them—they don't have to blow-dry your hair like they do for female clients. And if the salon's owner is your stylist, skip him too. "Generally, owners charge more," Argeras says. "It isn't customary to tip them."
