Q: I'm finally upgrading from futon to couch and want something stylish that won't look dated in a few years. What should I buy?
A: First of all, this upgrade should have happened around Y2K, but better late than never. If you have no idea what you like—and you sound pretty clueless—opt for simplicity. Angular, leather silhouettes in black—DWR has some good ones--look butch, chic, and classic all at the same time. (Who cares if your living room looks kind of like a psychiatrist's office?) But whatever fabric and color you choose, do not go for a sofa bed. There's nothing sexy about pausing mid-grope to pull out a mattress.
