Teen Fashion Blogger Robert I. Brown on Why He Doesn't Follow Trends

You and Robert Brown probably have some mutual interests. He worships the Rat Pack, loves his desert boots, and counts F. Scott Fitzgerald among his favorite authors. One thing you probably don't have in common with the style blogger: He's 16, a high-school student from New Orleans East—and his site, Robert I. Brown Style, is a fresh, sophisticated, and charming voice in the echo-chamber-y fashion blogosphere. In his final post for Details.com, he shares some parting thoughts on trends, teenagers, and inspiration.

I don't love anything about fashion. If I may borrow a statement from the great Ralph Lauren, I'm anti-fashion. I'm all for studying the classics and allowing them to influence personal style, but I've found that too much attention to trends can get in the way of discovering one's true sartorial purpose. Having a developed sense of personal style means your clothes and behavior look good regardless of what's in or out that season.

The only advice I'd give to other high school guys about fashion is to avoid it. The biggest mistake people my age usually make is following the crowd and trying to please their friends. I guess this is to fit in and be "cool," but I celebrate those who are brave enough to skip the line—to stand out at the front of it by dressing the way they'd like to. It's all about the basic principles of being a leader and not a follower, something my mother has drilled into me.

I love beautiful things—ranging from my favorite car (the Aston Martin DB9) to attractive women—and though it may sound cliché, I get inspiration from everywhere. Mostly, though, I'm motivated by the way I want to live my life when I'm older. I know I haven't worked hard enough to own the car that I want to own or to travel to the other side of the world whenever I please, but that's why I'm starting now. I want to be in control, and I don't want to live a normal life.
