1970s Cinema, Distilled: A Must-Have Box Set

Davy Jones never rode a motorcycle alongside Dennis Hopper, but the Monkees and Easy Rider were both creations of rebel producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, who teamed with Steve Blauner to form BBS Productions in 1969. Now the trio's countercultural contributions to Hollywood are thoughtfully chronicled in America Lost and Found: The BBS Story (Criterion Collection, from $100). The seven-film set includes not only the most celebrated titles (The Last Picture Show, Five Easy Pieces) but also the more obscure ones, such as Head, starring the Monkees and cowritten by Jack Nicholson. It's a must-have for easy riders and daydream believers alike. David Walters
