Brennan Woods of the Pursuit Aesthetic on How to Make a Suit Your Own

Dressing for the job you want doesn't have to mean looking just like your boss. Though office culture should influence what you wear in the workplace, you shouldn't be overly concerned with conforming. Here are some of my favorite ways to suit up but still look (and feel) like myself.

ADD A POCKET SQUARE:
One of the easiest ways to distinguish yourself is by wearing a crisp linen pocket square. I prefer mine all white or ivory with a colored edge, but if you're a little more adventurous, throw in a patterned or even a textured silk shibori one.

JAZZ UP YOUR LAPEL:
You can actually use that buttonhole in your lapel. Whether you go with a felt flower—popularized by Mr. Wong of Most Exerent, among others—or a boutonnière, adorning your actual jacket delivers instant charm. If your suit is missing this feature, your neighborhood tailor can add it in just a few minutes.

DON'T TAKE YOUR SOCKS SO SERIOUSLY:
Instead of matching your socks to your pants, coordinate them with your shirt, sweater, or even your tie. Then throw on a pair of double monk straps (like the Sid Mashburn pair here) in place of your standard wingtips, loafers, or capped toes, and you're set.
