The Best: Ralph Lauren Opens His Classic Car Collection To The Public

Sure, sure—You've seen Ralph Lauren's shirts, stores, and even his dinnerware. This though, is something rarer, and, curiously, more personal. Unlike, say, Diane Von Furstenberg or Marc Jacobs, Mr. Lauren rarely lets the public get a glimpse of the personality behind the Polo icon—it just doesn't match with the unflappable image of his Northeastern classic Americana. But with a new exhibition of his collection of classic cars at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, we're getting a view of the eight-year-old boy inside him. Like a kid amassing the best Matchbox collection on the block, Lauren hasn't held back on grabbing every beautiful "toy" he could find and locking them in his Bedford, New York garage — Jaguars, Bentleys, Ferraris, Alfa Romeos, and Bugattis. If, as they say, you can judge a man by his vehicle (or vehicles) then Paris is the place to learn more about the inner Lauren than perhaps anywhere but his own living room.

"The Art of the Automobile: Masterpieces from the Ralph Lauren Collection", April 28th through August 28th, 2010, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, 107 rue de Rivoli, Paris, www.lesartsdecoratifs.fr
