A Bowie Film Retrospective: From Ziggy Stardust to Labyrinth

Even though he's more or less settled down into being a well-dressed, crooning multi-millionaire, David Bowie is still the definition of the self-consciously mercurial pop artist. More so than Madonna, who can't act, and the chronically desperate Lady Gaga, the former David Robert Jones is ambidextrous when it comes to the audio and visual arts (see a slideshow of his many looks here). With multiple concert films and 30 IMDB acting credits to his name (around the same as Elvis) ranging from 1976's piercing The Man Who Fell To Earth to a recent vocal appearance on SpongeBob SquarePants, he's stretched himself as much as an on-screen performer as he has a musician. The time is right, then, for a career retrospective, and the smart New York-based Museum of Arts and Design is happy to oblige. A visual "Greatest Hits" collection, David Bowie, Artist will include interactive kiosks in the Museum highlighting his changing appearance and music videos, as well as a film series including screenings of his performances as a New Wave vampire in The Hunger, Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ, and, a childhood favorite of ours, Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth. Running from May 9 to July 15, the retrospective's full program and screening schedule is available at www.madmuseum.org. You'll have to visit to see if his SpongeBob performance made the cut.
