Designer Night Stands: Go to Bed with 6 of America's Coolest Architects and Furniture-Makers

Currently on view at Manhattan's
Phillips de Pury gallery is "Pin-Up Nightstands" an exhibition created with
Pin-Up Magazine consisting of 12 one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture created by some of America's most innovative artists, architects, and designers. United by purpose and scale but diverse in aesthetics and materials, each one plays with that most intimate of furnishings:
the night stand. We chose our favorite six—from a 200-pound hunk of concrete to an S&M-inspired leather perch—and asked the men behind them to reveal what's on their own bedside tables. Check out their responses and works in the slideshow below.

Rafael de Cárdenas: "A stack of
New Yorkers, earplugs, a hot water bottle, Advil PM, and Jonathan Olivares' new book
A Taxonomy of Office Chairs."

Ben Aranda:"Actually I don't own a bedside table. Too bourgie for me. My design partner Chris Lasch and I are not interested in objects, so we initially thought of a design that balances on the forehead of whomever happens to be sleeping next to you. We called it a One Night Stand."

Theo Richardson: "Currently on my night stand: old Prada glasses, a travel guide to Greece, an iPhone, taxi and Whole Foods receipts, and my Omega Speedmaster watch."
Alexander Williams: "A pair of wire snippers,
The Economist, knock-off clear RayBan sunglasses by Joyrich, and my exhibitor badge from the International Contemporary Furniture Fair."
Charles Brill: "Change. Lots of change."

Matt Olsen (left): "My night stand has way too many magazines and books on it. I often knock off my General Electric alarm clock while rummaging through the pile. Right now, the new issue of
Purple magazine and
In Praise of Shadows by Jun'ichir Tanizaki are on top."

Leon Ransmeier: "I actually don't have a night stand. But if I did, I would keep a glass of filtered tap water on it, along with my vintage spectacles and whatever I'm reading. I just finished
The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work by Alain de Botton. Highly recommended!"

Westley Rozen: "Collectively we have: A denture cup, a Bible, some old porn, melatonin, and under the bed, a Louisville Slugger. The wife has massage oil, a copy of
Moby-Dick, a D-Cell Maglite, and a Glock 22 with a 29-round mag full of 155-grain Federal Cartridge Hydra-Shoks."
