The Polka-Dot Robe Returns: Engineered Garments and Mark McNairy Make It Hip Again

POLKADOT050511_1_blog.jpg

Like galoshes and double-knit sweaters, the polka-dot robe is one of those casualties of early-20th-century gentlemen's style that just didn't make it past your grandpa's generation. Sad. Thanks then to Engineered Garments' Daiki Suzuki (above, left) and former J. Press creative director Mark McNairy (above, right) — who, by the by, who took over as the creative director for Woolrich Woolen Mills from Suzuki — for digging into fashion's not-so-hip past and dusting off the old staple and giving it a second chance at cool. Available in eye-popping red with black dots, a more subtle gray chambray, and denim color schemes, the robes are distinctively different from the antique version— larger, inspired by workwear structuring, and featuring three oversize pockets big enough for all of grandpa's pipes (or two or three remotes). Sold only through the pop-up store at the Nepenthes New York Gallery, they're a cheeky reanimation of a bygone men's classic.

(Slamxhype) Mark McNairy x Engineered Garments Polka-Dot Robe, $275 at Nepenthes New York Gallery, 307 West 38th Street; 212-643-9540 or at www.nepenthesnewyork.blogspot.com.
