Album of the Week: Release The Sunbird's Come Back to Us (Download a Free Track)
Every summer needs a few hours spent drinking beer by a roaring campfire. With his new project, Release the Sunbird, and debut album, Come Back to Us
, Zach Rogue—the lead singer of the Oakland, California, indie-pop band Rogue Wave—has created a fine soundtrack for those moments. Anyone familiar with Rogue Wave will hear their hushed echoes in songs like "It's All Around You," "A New You," and "Always Like the Son"
—atmospheric, acoustic-driven tracks with twinkling percussion. While the listening is, indeed, very easy, don't lump Release the Sunbird in with the lazy adolescence of Dave Matthews and his progeny (O.A.R., Jack Johnson, et al.). This is a more honest, well-wrought, and soulful fireside sound—closer to the Jayhawks and a softer Ryan Adams than those college-targeted acts. Instead, Release the Sunbird's nearest tonal cousin is Iron and Wine, though they are far less quiet and cloyingly emotional. On Come Back to Us,
Rogue isn't trying to break your heart—he just wants to warm it for a few minutes.
