In 1983, an enigmatic, eye-patch-wearing Canadian named Peter Gatien
transformed the New York club scene by opening Limelight in a former
church. He went on to run three more clubs, becoming the city's most
notorious nightlife impresario, until the law-and-order Giuliani
administration put him out of business, eventually leading to his
deportation in 2003. The documentary Limelight offers a sympathetic
history (his daughter was a producer) of Gatien's reign without skimping
on colorful anecdotes from associates like club-land killer Michael Alig
(the subject of the film Party Monster) and Ecstasy kingpin "Lord"
Michael Caruso. Limelight comes to theaters September 23.
