Album of the Week: CSS's La Liberación (Download a Free Track)
The sexually and fashionably aware Brazilian five-piece electro-dance-punk outfit CSS
(short for Cansei de Ser Sexy, a Portuguese translation of a Beyoncé quote, "tired of being sexy") continue to release dancing snakes from nut cans on their third full-length album. Coming three years after their last go around, the 11-track La Liberación
(V2) is exactly what lovers of this band of scamps have been waiting for—high-energy party anthems combining pop, rock, hip-hop, and reggae ideal for the dance floor and car commercials. The lead singer, the multilingual and bedazzling São Paulo native Luísa Matsushita (a.k.a. Lovefoxxx) channels M.I.A., Kim Gordon, and Karen O on the electro-synth track "Hits Me Like a Rock," (download for free below) a duet with Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream. "City Grrrl" tells the autobiographical tale of a rock chick from the suburbs seeking big-city approval. Its rousing chorus is ready-made for a moving-to-NYC tweeny-bop film montage, most likely starring the cast of Gossip Girl.
The band's propulsive drums and bass swell to an electro-clash apex on the particularly addictive "You Could Have It All." At its core, La Liberación
is a dancey punk-pop vessel in new disco clothes rife with guitars and perfect for the pregame, the club, and
