The multitalented creative director of Thierry Mugler, fashion director for Uniqlo, and personal stylist to Lady Gaga gave us 60 Seconds to discuss everything from style to success to sex appeal.
Wear what makes you comfortable
"With the work that I do for Gaga, people expect me to walk around in some Philip Treacy ensemble. But I like clothes that are easily wearable, and that means things that aren't overly constructed. Most of my wardrobe is Uniqlo and vintage stuff from Search & Destroy in the East Village."
Don't hide who you are
"The new Mugler collection contains clothes that reveal more of the body, and I don't think men should be afraid of that."
Get out of the house
"It's so important as a creative person to go out and look for things. Go to galleries, talk to people, read books. Yes, you can just type something into Google, but if you read and interact, you'll have a deeper understanding of the world."
Bring the outdoors inside
"Having plants and flowers in my space makes me feel very calm and Zen. For me, it's important to meditate every morning to be very clear in the head, and nature really helps me do the same thing."
"I used to not care what anyone said, but with my Tumblr, I'll put something up and instantly there are 500 messages in response. Sometimes people say, 'It's shit,' but if someone says something, I should listen. What's the point if you're not talking and listening?"
…But trust your gut
"When I first started working with Gaga, all my fashion friends asked me, "Why are you working with her?" We're also partnering with the porn site XTube for the new Mugler collection [the site features a video of Mugler-clad models simulating sex], which could get me fired. But in both cases, that's what inspired me, regardless of what people say."
Nicola's Favorite Things
Last concert: "This experimental electro band called the Black Soft, who play dark eighties music, which I love. I'm also into Jessica 6 and the lead singer, Nomi Ruiz—she's so beautiful."
Book of the moment: "Band of Bikers, which is just Polaroids of motorcycle riders. Yikes!"
Obsession: "I'm half-Japanese, so I collect toys, like a Yayoi Kusama stuffed pumpkin."
Party scene: "I like places where you can dance to crazy music, like Bedlam or Eastern Bloc in the East Village. Gaga likes drinking at dive bars, but it's not quite my scene. I'm like, 'Um, there's no gay people here.'"
