Throughout his almost 50-year career, the German designer Ingo Maurer has obsessed over the "magical and mystical" qualities of light, conjuring everything from illuminated wallpaper to LED- embedded coffee tables. So it's fitting that Maurer's brand recently produced this aluminum desk lamp, which reimagines the 1937 self-balancing Luxo L-1 as a functional optical illusion. The shade is flattened to approximately a quarter-inch thick, and the "bulb" is no more than a string of LEDs. Looksoflat by Stefan Geisbauer for Ingo Maurer, $1,960; ingo-maurer.com
