Last week, I headed to the Baselworld watch show in—you guessed it—Basel, Switzerland, to check out all the newest horological offerings from the best watch brands in the world. It was an intense two days packed with back-to-back appointments, but I did get to see all the amazing new collections, creations, and innovations of the year, and it did not disappoint. Bell & Ross Argentium:
One of the big
trends aesthetically that stood out this year for me was grey on
grey.
Carl F. Bucherer
TravelTec FourX:
There are simple three-hand watches, and then there
are ones like the TravelTec. It's truly impressive, thanks to a
chronograph function, three time zones, and a date indicator. I
particularly love the skeleton dial that shows you the all the guts of
the watch, and the subtle use of rose gold.
Casio Pro Trek:
With the crazy popularity of the G-Shock series, it's easy to forget
that Casio has other great collections. This Pro Trek caught my eye
immediately. Packed with every outdoor function that one could ever
need, it's perfect for the hyperactive outdoor enthusiast or urbanite
(like myself) who just likes the army green case and camo straps.
Chopard
Manufactum:
The new collection being added to the already impressive
Chopard watch range is classic and beautiful, taking design inspiration
from vintage pocket watches.
Longines
Heritage 1940:
Another example
of a classic gentleman's watch. If it ain't broke, why fix it.
Louis Vuitton Tambour
America's Cup:
At LV, this year is all about celebrating The Tambour
(the original iconic watch by Louis Vuitton) and the America's Cup.
Wrapped in black rubber with red, white, and blue accents, you don't
need to be into sailing to appreciate this beauty. Oh, and it also
boasts Regatta race-timing functions.
Movado
Datron:
The blacked out trend
continues to be strong in the men's watch market. Movado introduced this
full PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) version of their Datron range, and
it's a beauty.
Nautica BFD 102:
As in menswear, military influences are a constant in the watch world.
Here's an understated, classic example from Nautica.
Nixon Automatic Chrono:
Over the years,
Nixon has been steadily stepping up their watch-making game by
introducing Mechanical watches to their line. This year, they introduced
this automatic chronograph with a Valjoux (popular high-end Swiss
movement manufacturer) movement.
Omega
Speedmaster Racing:
The newest
addition added to the the Speedmaster family, the Racing pays tribute to
Omega's motor racing roots. With classic motor influences, this
chronograph is a timeless addition to any man's wrist.
Oris Kittiwake Limited
Edition:
Made to commemorate the USS Kittiwake, which was sunk last
year off the shores of the Grand Caymans to form a new artificial reef,
this limited edition diving watch not only has serious diving
capabilities but also a great story behind it.
Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Regulator:
On the
surface, it's just a beautifully crafted time piece with an unusual way
of telling time, however, the fact that it combines a "regulator" dial
with an annual calendar is apparently a feat that Patek Philippe alone
is able to achieve.
Swiss Army
Original:
One of my favorite watches from last year's Basel show
features new color treatments like this grey version.
Tag Heuer Jack Heuer
80 Birthday Watch:
To celebrate his 80th birthday this year, the
brand's founder personally designed this beauty.
Timex Easy Reader:
This iconic watch from Timex got a tone-on-tone treatment.
