It was beautiful this past weekend in New York City, and I partook in that generations-spanning cliché of having a catch in the park with my son. Almost as tear-inducing as this Normal Rockwell moment was just how perfectly broken-in my decades-old baseball glove is.
As any former Little Leaguer knows, getting your glove in game shape takes years, including restless nights with the rubber-band-encased mitt under your mattress. But, as it turns out, all you really need is some freaking great leather.
Coach, the 71-year-old maker of elegant leather goods, has just released a limited-edition baseball glove to complement its famed bags, belts, and wallets. But this thing is no novelty item. The regulation handcrafted mitt (available in tan and chocolate brown) feels extra-supple compared to what my Rawlings "Robin Yount" model felt like off the shelf. It's game-ready on Day 1—provided said game is not much more intense than your weekend beer league. And the randomness of a Coach baseball glove is mitigated by the fact that the company's original leather goods were designed to replicate the feel of a broken-in mitt. (It's also producing a line of billfolds for its Heritage Baseball line made from used gloves bought on eBay.)
At $348, the Coach baseball glove isn't exactly a bargain, but this Father's Day you could spend a lot more on your favorite baseball-loving dude and get a lot less. Plus, the guarantee of many Field of Dreams-style memories is included at no extra charge.
To get on the waiting list for the glove, visit the Coach Bleecker Men's Store (370 Bleecker St., New York City; 212-243-3612).
