Helmut Newton, Like You've Never Seen Him Before

When you think of Helmut Newton, you probably think of his bold, graphic black-and-white fashion photography for magazines like Vogue, which offered a radical new (and since endlessly imitated) way of seeing the female form. But like his peer Richard Avedon, Newton's tastes and interests were more Catholic than he showed in the money jobs he became famous for.

The Berlin-born lensman also often shot arresting landscapes throughout Europe and in L.A., where he spent his winters late in life (he died in a car accident outside the Chateau Marmont in 2004), as well as steamy portraits of the glamorous demimonde in which he traveled.

A new Los Angeles exhibition of 40 large-scale works, aptly titled Helmut Newton: Sex and Landscapes, captures these sidelines. The place where the pictures are gathered deserves almost as much notice as the show itself: It's the inaugural exhibition of Perry Rubenstein's new Hollywood gallery, which replaces his longtime Manhattan location in Chelsea—still more proof that L.A. has stopped playing second fiddle to New York in the art world.
