In this series, Details market director Matthew Marden identifies egregious trends in men's fashion. This week, he's got beef with the shape of your shoes.
The square-toe dress shoe is by far one of the worst mistakes men have been making for years.
First of all, they always look cheap, no matter how much you spent on them. Second, the proportions are horrible, and the shape is completely jarring to the eye, causing your foot to look wider and larger than it actually is. I don't know how this all started or why—though I feel like Jason Priestley is partially to blame.
The point is, it needs to stop. And you don't need to spend a fortune on a pair of shoes to get it right; just stick to a shoe with a classic rounded toe, like a wingtip or a plain oxford. If you aren't sure whether the toes are too square, then they probably are and you shouldn't buy them.
