Backstage at the Details Grooming-Video Shoots

We know you care about your hair. We see the trends every day—in what you click on, what you search for, and where you comment. And we realized there was a huge opportunity to answer all your questions about shaving, hair products, skin care, and yes, even balding. So we produced a series of mercifully brief videos to tackle all these topics and more.

Clearly, you liked our cinematic approach: "The James Dean Look" and "The Mad Men Look" have consistently held the "most viewed" spot this summer—a testament to the popularity of those clips as well as your desire to try a new do. (You can see all the videos in our official grooming guide.) Below, a behind-the-scenes look at what went into making the series.

About the Casting
Style editor Jason Chen met with top models, took iPhone photos of them, and kept track of which ones had the right type of hairline and hair thickness needed for each topic being filmed. Chen also consulted with editor-at-large Andrea Oliveri on selecting the perfect people (key issue: Would we want to work with this model for a whole day?).

About the Stylist
Celebrity hairstylist Diana Schmidtke is a legend in the field. She's worked with almost every Hollywood star in the game: Chris Hemsworth, Chris O'Donnell, Christian Bale, Colin Farrell, Colin Firth—and those are just the "C" names. We were thrilled to have the chance to capture her skills on camera.

About the Products Featured
We didn't dare tell Schmidtke what products to use. There was absolutely no product placement.

About the Look and Feel of the Footage
It's not easy to create a two-minute video that is both useful and sexy. Director Bryce Ward breathed life into what could have been a bunch of dull instructional videos. He gracefully combined black and white with color, sourced inspiring music, and kept the edits quick but not conspicuous.

About the Beard-Trimming Video
Initially, there was no plan to shoot a beard-trimming video. We knew we were going to do a segment on shaving, so we asked models to come in with some scruff, letting them know that we would be shaving it off on camera. But then one model (Andrew) showed up with a beard that was so impressive (and such a part of his rugged, outdoorsy, Italiano look), we decided to devote a whole segment to beard-trimming. And why not? On the right guy, it's a great masculine feature.
