While athletes go for the gold in London's Olympic Park, another class of talent is on display in the East End at the venerable Whitechapel Gallery.
"The London Open"—an expanded edition of an 80-year-old show that has highlighted early work by art superstars like Antony Gormley and Anish Kapoor—features pieces by 35 of the city's most promising up-and-comers (chosen from more than 1,800 applicants), from Pio Abad's fetishistic disco-inspired objets to Caroline Achaintre's abstract hand-tufted-wool wall hangings (pictured below).
