The seven-foot-one All-Star basketball player is busy in London propelling Team USA to an almost-certain gold-medal finish—but not without making some time for his off-court interests. We caught up with him, by phone, in the middle of a shopping trip, to hear about his time across the pond.
DETAILS: What's Olympic Village like? Is it as crazy as everyone says?
TYSON CHANDLER: I didn't go to college, but the other guys tell me this is what it's like. Instead of students, there are athletes, and everyone's walking around asking what event you're in and where you're from.
DETAILS: There's a lot of pressure playing on the international stage. How does the team blow off steam or calm their nerves before a game?
TYSON CHANDLER: The team camaraderie has been great. With so many pranksters and jokesters on the team, we're pretty calm at all times. No one gets by without getting pranked.
DETAILS: Who pulls the most pranks?
TYSON CHANDLER: I'd say Kevin Love, Lebron [James], and Andre [Iguodala].
DETAILS: Which artists are on your Olympic-warm-up playlist?
TYSON CHANDLER: Tupac, Jay-Z, and Biggie.
DETAILS: It's not easy to eat healthy while traveling. Do you have a go-to power breakfast?
TYSON CHANDLER: I like to get high on carbs. As long as I get that in, I'm all right. Oatmeal, eggs, pancakes, waffles, bagels, toast—I need it because I burn so much energy.
DETAILS: You're into fashion and even made Vogue's best-dressed list for the Costume Institute Gala Benefit at the Met. Are there any stores you're excited to visit?
TYSON CHANDLER: I'm actually out shopping as we speak. I'm on the east side of London and sitting outside a boutique right now. As soon as we finish the conversation, I'm going to go wander around.
DETAILS: Who's the best-dressed player on Team USA?
TYSON CHANDLER: Me.
DETAILS: After you?
TYSON CHANDLER: Probably Lebron.
