In the Just Stop series, Details fashion director Matthew Marden identifies abominations in men's fashion. This week he has a major issue with shapeless chinos.
Ill-fitting chinos continue to be a problem for men. Whether they're wearing plain-front or pleated trousers, men across America seem drawn to the baggy, boxy, wide-legged, billowy garment—and it needs to stop. You definitely don't want to walk around in pants that give you diaper butt.
Get a pair that fits you properly. And that doesn't mean skin-tight. There's a multitude of great chino cuts out there, and, depending on the brand, the best are usually straight-leg or slim-fit. The silhouette is more streamlined and just looks cleaner. Steer clear of anything in a "relaxed fit" that is described as "fuller through the seat and thigh." Also consider chinos in a jean cut; these have a dressier vibe but are as comfortable as your favorite jeans. And no matter what the cut, remember that chinos should always be cotton and never a synthetic fabric.
