Cool Thing of the Week: WakaWaka Power Station and Light

No, the WakaWaka Power has nothing to do with the catchphrase made famous by a certain Muppet. It's a solar-powered battery pack that's small enough to fit in your pocket yet powerful enough to charge your phone, iPod, or tablet if, like the thousands of people affected by Hurricane Sandy, you suddenly find yourself without electricity. It takes roughly a day to fully charge and works even in rainy or overcast conditions. A full day's solar charge can power the built-in reading light for more than 40 hours and take your phone to a 100 percent charge.

Even if you're not anticipating the next super-storm, the WakaWaka is as rugged as it is efficient, making it an excellent choice for campers and outdoorsmen/women. It's currently available for preorder on Kickstarter for $69, with units expected to ship in May 2013.
