6 Iconic Hair Styles: An Illustrated How-To

The fauxhawk. The jerry curl. The mullet. The fauxhawk-jerry-curl-mullet. Hair trends come and go, but classic styles remain, well, classic. To pay homage to some of these iconic looks, illustration artist Silvia Prada created a series of charming and nostalgic drawings titled "The New Modern Hair: A Styling Chart," on view at The Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles until February 26th, 2013.

For tips on how to recreate some our favorite (and time-tested) looks, we turned to one of New York's top men's hairstylists, Takamichi Saeki.

Takamichi's take: "The front is key here; it's what softens the entire look. While the style is inspired by the 1940s, Silvia's interpretation is modern because of the sides, which are short and tight. This works best on thick hair with a naturally wavy texture."

Takamichi's tips: "I recommend washing with an extremely hydrating shampoo like Molton Brown Plum-kadu Glossing Shampoo to prep. On slightly damp hair, use a couple pumps of Goldwell Trendline Curl Kick, run the product through with your fingers, and dry with a diffuser. When hair is completely dry, finish with a quarter-sized dollop of EVO Casual Act Moulding Paste; it's light, and will help hair keep the shape, which should be controlled and not too loose."

Hollywood
Takamichi's take: "This look is romantic and slightly androgynous, ideal for a modern man who isn't afraid to show off his softer side. It works best on medium-length hair with a fine texture."

Takamichi's tips: "After shampooing hair, towel-dry and use L'Oreal Professionnel Homme Force 1 Brillantine Polishing Cream Hair Styling Wax. It's lightweight and gives a lot of shine. For a more wet look, mix the cream with a dab of Neil George Indian Gooseberry Treatment Oil in the palm of your hands and run mixture through the hair with your fingers. Hair should be loose and free."

The Gladiator
Takamichi's take: "This is an archetypal, sexy, bad boy look. It feels very James Dean. This works on straight hair of all textures, from fine to coarse."

Takamichi's tips: "Wash hair and towel-dry. Apply Kerastase Homme Capital Force Gel and blow dry with Denman's Small Nylon Bristle Brush. Mist TIGI Bed Head Men Power Surge Hair Spray all over to finish."

Wash And Wear
Takamichi's take: "A very '80s, romantic look. The key is the keeping the fringe in the front short and soft. This works best on tight, curly hair."

Takamichi's tips: "This style requires a lot of moisturizing, so wash with a rich shampoo like Kiehl's Olive Fruit Oil Nourishing Shampoo, followed by Milbon Nigel AX Treatment B to keep hair soft and frizz-free. To style, use Kiehl's Heat-Protective Silk Straightening Cream, which keeps curls long and soft, followed by Sedu Anti-Frizz Polishing Treatment with Moroccan Argan Oil for shine."

Professional Contour
Takamichi's take: "This is a very masculine style that's both classic and chic at the same time. It suits a wide range of men, and is professional and laid back at the same time. It's totally back in fashion and feels very of-the-moment. It works best on straight hair with a fine to medium texture."

Takamichi's tips: "Blow dry hair until it's almost dry, but still slightly damp. Then take a dollop of Shu Uemura Silk Mesh Elastic Moldable Cream, and comb it through. Let hair air dry. For a super-strong hold, use American Crew Fiber Pliable Molding Cream."

The Capri
Takamichi's take: "This style is really versatile since it's up to how much you want to style it. It could look professional during the week and be more relaxed and playful on the weekend. It works best on thick, slightly wavy hair."

Takamichi's tips: "This look needs to be soft, but controlled. After shampooing, apply Prejume Milk 3 (it gives great shine and movement) to damp, towel-dried hair. Then blow dry with fingers. If necessary, use a small roller brush on the front of the hair for added volume. Finish styling with Prejume Wax 3, which gives a light, flexible hold."
