A Better Fitness Tracker: The Sleek, Wireless Misfit Shine

Plenty of flashy new activity-tracking devices have gone to market over the past year, each claiming to be the hidden key to unlocking your full fitness potential, but none are as impressive as the Misfit Shine. Made from lightweight yet rugged solid aircraft-grade aluminum, the Shine is the size of a quarter and can be worn as a wristband, brooch, or clasp to track your every movement, from bike pedals and swim strokes to the steps you take walking around your office.

It's also wireless in a sense (read: no tangled cables or remembering to charge it at night), but because it's solid metal it can't transmit data wirelessly. Not to worry; the Misfit team, which includes former Apple CEO John Sculley, created a system that's far more intuitive and efficient. Open the app on your iPhone (sorry, no word on Android support yet) and simply place the Shine directly on the screen. It will input your data from the device and allow you to manage and track your fitness goals.

Unlike bracelet-style alternatives like the Nike+ FuelBand and the Jawbone Up, you can wear the Shine off your wrist, clasping it anywhere on your body, which is perfect for guys who don't want anything more than their timepiece getting wrist real estate. Rubber and leather bracelets are available for purchase if that's your preference, but in our opinion that takes away from what's so great about the Shine—its understated, elegant design allows it to be hidden instead of put on display.

Expected release is March 2013. Preorder yours for $99.
