At last, Mad Men dos are on the wane. Instead, celebrities and tastemakers are opting for slightly tousled looks that are pulled-together but not fussy.
Slightly disheveled hair with some lift and texture. Think of it as polished bedhead—it doesn't look like you just woke up, but there aren't visible comb lines in your hair, either. "For a while we were over-groomed, so it's refreshing to see this kind of effortless hair again," says Aviva, a celebrity stylist whose clients include Elijah Wood, Darren Criss, and Michael Fassbender. "Just remember to keep your clothes tailored, so the overall look isn't messy."
How to Get It
The stylist should hold shears at a 90-degree angle and "point cut" into hair, creating little notches or divots that result in imperfect lines and produce texture, Aviva says. Leave two to three inches on top (any more and you'll lose volume) and one and a half to two inches around the crown, with the fade getting progressively shorter, down to a half-inch at the neckline.
How to Style It
Apply a texturizing pomade or gel like Phyto Phytovolume Actif Volumizer Spray ($28; drugstore.com) to damp roots, then use your fingers to work the product through evenly. If you have straight hair, twist locks into separated tufts while using a blow-dryer on low intensity and medium heat until your hair is dry. If you have wavy or curly hair, air-drying is fine.
The Endorsement: Pssssst! Dry Shampoo
This product isn't meant to replace the shampoo you use in the shower, but it's an effective way to remove grease from unwashed hair and add lift to fine or thinning strands. There are luxe versions out there, but according to Aviva, the best product for men is Pssssst! Instant Dry Shampoo ($6; cvs.com), which comes in an aerosol spray bottle and is available at most drugstores. "Use it once in the morning and once to freshen up hair before heading out for the evening," she says.
Wash This Way: The Rules of Shampooing
There's a big difference between keeping a little natural oil in your hair and going for the unwashed-greaser look. Vaughn Acord, of Mizu in New York City, offers these tips for hitting the sweet spot.
1. Don't shampoo more than three times a week.
2. If you need to wash more often because you work out, try a gentle option like Oribe's Signature Shampoo ($34; oribe.com).
3. Use a light-hold styling product like Bb. Texture Hair (Un)dressing Creme ($28; bumbleandbumble.com) after you shower.
4. Change your shampoo a few times a year, as hair can become accustomed to the formula, making it less effective.
