As the Cannes Film Festival draws to a close, Details caught up with famed Cannes barber Laurent Briard, who prepped VIP guests for the red carpet. Here, Briard shares his favorite men's grooming looks and gives simple tips for how to re-create them at home.
Cannes red-carpet guests got the VIP treatment in the Chivas-sponsored grooming prep room.
Who: Justin Timberlake (Inside Llewyn Davis)
Laurent says: "Justin's a chameleon—he's always changing up his look and always getting it right. Everyone watches his every move, style-wise. His look is very of the moment: a modern take on the classic undercut, paired with a natural beard."
Get the look: Grow out your beard for about a week and keep the neckline slightly tapered for a subtle edge. Hair should be kept very short on the sides and the back and much longer on top. Use a shiny wax (Davines Wonder Wax sculpts and defines longer hair with a touch of shine) and comb backward, from roots to ends, for a clean, polished appearance.
Who: Leonardo DiCaprio (The Great Gatsby)
Laurent says: "Guys are always requesting 'the Leo' in my barbershop, as he's perfected the formula for looking impeccably groomed on the red carpet. Leo's look at Cannes this year was very retro, with a severe, deep part, tons of shine, and slicked-back sides. His beard is equally tidy."
Get the look: Clean up the outer edges of the beard with a trimmer, including the areas directly above and below the lip. Finish with a beard wash (like Bluebeards Original Extra Conditioning Beard Wash) to keep whiskers and skin underneath clean and soft. Comb generous amounts of alcohol-free gel (American Crew's Firm Hold Styling Gel combines both heavy-duty hold and high shine) throughout damp hair and let air-dry. Finish with a mist of hair spray for extra hold.
Who: Christoph Waltz (Cannes Jury Member)
Laurent says: "Here's someone who looks like he just woke up but somehow manages to appear handsome and charming. His style is easy, mature, and quietly confident. He's clearly not trying to be the center of attention, but he's impossible to ignore."
Get the look: Keep the sideburns long and full. With the hair, you're going for a very matte, almost rough look. Apply a dime-size dab of a medium-hold cream (Fatboy Perfect Putty) to create a little direction and texture. Use your fingers, not a comb, to keep the look as natural as possible. Make sure to shave with a super-lubricating cream (like Billy Jealousy's Hydroplane) to prevent unsightly nicks and bumps.
Who: Garrett Hedlund, (Inside Llewyn Davis)
Laurent says: "Garrett's our modern-day rebel. His look is a bit dirty, grungy, strong, and sexy, and he has bona fide bad-boy appeal."
Get the look: The key word for hair here is long. It's longer all over (not just the top, as in JT's look) and slicked back all over, too. Don't wash hair for at least a couple of days, then run a strong-hold wax (like Cutler Hair Care Specialist Fly-Away Control Stick) through the hair with your fingers and let air-dry. Keep facial hair along the jawline short, while letting the mustache and goatee sport a fuller look.
Who: Joel Edgerton, (The Great Gatsby)
Laurent says: "The look strikes a balance between chic and rugged. The beard is longer, a bit unkempt, and not too neat, while the hair, in contrast, is longer, more polished, with a touch of shine."
Get the look: Trim with a beard trimmer (Wahl Designer is ideal for thicker beards) and don't worry about cleaning up the edges too much, since you're going for a super-natural look. Then take a dollop of a soft styling pomade (try Baxter's Slick Pomade) and gently comb through dry hair. Let air-dry so the hair's natural texture comes through.
Chivas Regal 25, official partner to the Cannes Film Festival, hosted a 24-hour luxury experience that included red carpet grooming from Laurent Briard at the Chivas Salon 25.
