Simon Miller's Jake Sargent and Dan Corrigan recently expanded their premium denim line to include high-end knitwear and shirts, now available at Mr Porter. Details caught up with the L.A.-based design duo for their tips on denim care, how to shop as a tourist, and the best inspirational reading.
1. White denim is impossible to keep white. Embrace the wear and tear.2. Unless you're posting your rigid jeans on a blog, it's okay to wash them. Just turn them inside out, use cold water, and hang dry. Try to wait at least a few months, though, so they form to your body. 3. There's an art to wearing replica denim—don't try to dress it up or accessorize too much. Wear a T-shirt and a chunky sweater to keep it simple. Remember: You're not Johnny Depp. 4. Use cologne sparingly. It's a fragrance, not Febreze. 5. If you're ever in need of inspiration, read David Foster Wallace's This Is Water. It's the commencement speech he delivered to Kenyon College in 2005. 6. The experience of shopping often leaves a stronger impression than the purchase itself—seek out interesting retail, know your local shop owners, and travel. 7. Shop for local favorites when you travel abroad. Dunlop Volleys are the Converse of Australia—they're timeless and they cost $40. 8. Be consistent with your style—familiarity is one of the strongest rules of attraction.
