Woman of the Moment: Man of Steel's Amy Adams

How You Know Her: Brilliant red hair and a sugar-sweet persona made Amy Adams a stand out in her first major feature role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Catch Me If You Can. Since then she's racked up some serious acting cred in 2005's indie favorite Junebug, followed by Doubt, Julie & Julia, and The Fighter. Her recent performance in The Master as Peggy Dodd, the wife of a religious cult leader played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman (also starring Joaquin Phoenix), earned her a fourth Academy Awards nomination.

What You Don't Know: Adams took up acting because she needed a job. "I graduated high school and I didn't have a skill set and I didn't want to go to college. I needed a job. This is what I could do," she told Elle UK this month. Other careers she considered? After high school Adams took a full-time gig as a hostess at Hooters. "I did learn, quickly, that short shorts and beer don't mix," Adams told Vanity Fair. We're glad the whole "I'm going to L.A. to be an actor" thing worked out.

Current Project: While Henry Cavill may be getting all the attention, every superhero needs a leading lady and Adams is spot on as Lois Lane in the summer's most-anticipated blockbuster, Man of Steel (in theaters June 14).
