5 DIY Food-Based Grooming Treatments For Problem Hair and Skin

You already know you're supposed to get your daily serving of fruits and veggies, but forget eating them. Did you know that applying what's in your fridge directly to your skin and hair can work wonders? If you're plagued by dry skin, blemishes, dandruff, or dull hair, you can whip up these 5 natural remedies with ingredients you already have in your kitchen.

Problem: Dull, frizzy, lifeless hair.
Solution: Avocado, egg, and apple-cider vinegar.
Rich in healthy fats and protein, avocadoes are ideal for adding moisture and shine to your hair. They're also packed with vitamins A, E, K and C, which promote hair growth. Egg strengthens follicles and adds volume, texture, and shine. Apple-cider vinegar contains acetic, lactic, and malic acids that help restore strength and elasticity while smoothing and softening frizzy strands.
Try This at Home: Mix ½ cup honey with 2 tbsp of either avocado or egg yolk. Massage into clean, damp hair, let sit for 15 minutes, and rinse with warm water. Treatment can be applied once a month.

Problem: Dandruff or itchy, oily scalp.
Solution: Apple-cider vinegar has antibacterial agents that help shake off dandruff for good. It also helps restore your hair's healthy pH balance, which can solve scalp irritation and excessive oil production.
Try This at Home: Mix ¼ cup apple-cider vinegar with ¼ cup water. Pour into a spray bottle and spritz onto hair and scalp. Let sit for 15 minutes to an hour before rinsing. Use once or twice a week.

Problem: Oily, blemish-prone skin
Solution: Lemon, honey, and apple cider vinegar.
Lemon is a natural fix for oily, blemish-prone skin. It helps shrink the pores and combats acne, oil, and blackheads, and it's an excellent source of folate, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin B6, all of which help detoxify and replenish the skin. Both honey and apple-cider vinegar have antimicrobial properties which treat acne by healing skin and preventing infection.
Try This at Home: Squeeze half a lemon into a bowl. Add 2 tbsp honey and mix until blended. Apply all over a clean face and let sit for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing. Make sure hair is pulled away from the face, because this mask can be sticky.

Problem: Dry, aging skin.
Solution: Egg and honey.
The protein in raw eggs helps tighten and repair tissue, encouraging healthy cell turnover for younger-looking skin. Eggs also contain lutein, an antioxidant that helps maintain skin's elasticity. Honey can also be used to lock in moisture and fight fine lines.
Try This at Home: Mix one egg white with 2 tbsp of honey and blend thoroughly. Apply to the face, focusing on the nose, cheeks, and forehead. Let the mask dry completely before rinsing clean.

Problem: Dull, flaky skin.
Solution: Strawberries and honey.
The enzymes in strawberries help slough off the top layer of skin cells for gentle exfoliation and brighter overall tone, while honey hydrates without clogging pores. Both of these ingredients work for sensitive, dry, or oil skin types.
Try This at Home: Mash up 3 medium strawberries. Mix in 1 tbsp of honey. Massage the mixture into skin for 3 minutes before rinsing clean.
