Aim, New Lighting that Breaks All the Design Rules

Product: Aim for Flos

Designers: Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Paris

Designer brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec continue to challenge our expectations of household objects with their new lighting system, Aim. Created for Italian manufacturer Flos, the product refutes two rules of traditional ceiling fittings (which is way more exciting than it sounds). First, that cables are purely functional and should be hidden from view, and second, that fixtures should be mounted in the center of a room to cast an even glow.

Aim bucks conventional wisdom not just by exposing the hardwiring, but by showcasing the hanging loops of cords—making those the centerpiece as opposed to the lighting element. Inspired by the natural positioning of climbing plants, the lights can be suspended at any point along the cable to produce infinite options for a completely customizable space.

This isn't the first time the brothers have stolen the spotlight. After furniture manufacturing powerhouse Capellini handpicked the Bouroullecs out of a sea of designers showing their wares at the 1997 Salon de Meuble in Paris, and Issey Miyake followed suit with a commission to design his Paris retail space in 2000, the brothers skyrocketed to the forefront of the design scene. You might remember Clouds, their sculptural, tiled room dividers for textile manufacturer Kvadrat, or the Vegetal chair for Vitra, which draws inspiration from fastidiously—and fancifully—pruned 20th-century gardens.
