Home Interior Design: Texas Ranch House with a Built-In 1950s Camping Trailer

Location: Uvalde, Texas
Architects: Andrew Hinman Architecture
Size: 5,447 square feet
Completed: 2013

Perched atop a cliff overlooking the Nueces river, this south Texas ranch house is built around a vintage 1950s Airstream-style trailer, one of the owner's most precious possessions. Architect Andrew Hinmann was tasked with designing a new, modern house that made use of what are normally portable bedrooms and a dining area.

The fruits of Hinman's labor are both playful and practical. An open steel deck supports the 360-foot trailer, which opens on the lake-facing side to a glass-covered dining area and outdoor jacuzzi, and raises it above the area's flood plain. The entire building is protected by a slanted metal roof, which deflects rain water down the cliff towards the river.

Design details from the trailer are used throughout the attached home, including the porthole windows in the bathrooms, steel doors, and hanging, wire-covered lights, which add an outdoorsy feel to the space.

Given the whimsical nature of the project, Hinmann didn't take a heavy-handed approach with furnishings. Instead, the covered deck is outfitted with furniture that feels equally at home on a campground, like the blue plastic folding chairs and simple card table.

Because the project was intended to emphasize the elegance of the pristinely restored trailer rather than simply protect it from the elements, Hinmann made sure the family's primary living, dining, and sleeping quarters remain inside the trailer itself.
