Home Interior Design: Ultra Modern New Cubic House in Bangkok

Location: Bangkok, Thailand
Architects: Integrated Field
Size: 4,305 square feet
Completed: December 2012

Built for a family of five next door to their former home in Bangkok, this tall, cubic dwelling takes inspiration from the owner's love of the great outdoors. To bring the outside in, architecture firm Integrated Field focused on natural light, which filters through the modular living spaces via open glass panels and a large, central skylight.

What looks like an open-air central platform is in fact protected with sliding glass doors, which were constructed using slim steel fittings that allow them to disappear completely inside the walls.

The spacious living room opens onto a simple teak patio (furnished with a single rocking chair) and granite-framed lap pool lined with dark tile for a sleeker look.

At night, built-in ceiling lights in a neon triangle lend bold geometry to the home as well as illumination for the outdoor space.

Simple furnishings like gauzy white drapes and comfy, stuffed chairs balance the overall rigidity of the structure. The curtains, which serve as a practical visual barrier, also lend a little romance to the modern living area.

Inside, the space is divided by a zig-zagging wooden stairwell, which connects the ground floor living room to the bedrooms and bathroom. Clear glass along the stairs echoes the openness of the living room walls and also offers unobstructed views of special features like the geometric display shelves shown above.

The lofted kids bedrooms—accessible via a ladder—are easily the most fun aspect of the house. Here, a child's room, complete with built-in bookshelves and a rope cot that looks down to the living room below.

At the top of the home, the central wooden staircase becomes a series of (slightly precarious-looking) floating stone steps that lead to the skylight and rooftop terrace.
