The best example of Andy Kaufman's greatness isn't his role on Taxi or his alter ego Tony Clifton or his exploits in wrestling rings—it's the previously unheard material he recorded on microcassette tapes between 1977 and 1979.
The choicest moments, in which Kaufman subjects relatives, lovers, and strangers to brilliantly manipulative put-ons and provocations, have been collected on Andy and His Grandmother. It's performance-art-inspired comic genius at its most twisted. At one point, Kaufman explains to an audibly uncomfortable woman: "We just screwed, and here's the afterward conversation." After a post-coital recap ("So, uh, it didn't look to me like you were enjoying it that much"), Kaufman says he might include their exchange on a forthcoming album. The woman determines he's "probably joking." "Yeah, I am," he replies. "But how would you feel if I put this on a record?" Out July 16, dragcity.com.
