The Sling Set: 4 Designers Reinterpret the Relaxed Leather Chair

Laid-back? Yes, but these chairs are no slouches, as world-class designers have given the modernist icon a stylish makeover.

1. Duo
For their double-wide love seat, Belgian photographer Fien Muller and sculptor Hannes Van Severen reinterpret the low-slung forms of design icon Maarten Van Severen, Hannes' father. ($5,185)

2. Starling
Borrowing a page from mid-century Danish stars like Arne Jacobsen, New Zealand designer Cameron Foggo trades bulky upholstery for an extra-thin Delaware leather. ($2,540)

3. Sling
New York designer Kyle Garner's breakout piece, inspired by 1920s canvas deck chairs, has a leather seat that was produced in collaboration with Billykirk. ($1,450)

4. Ninna
This playful chair—whose name means "cradle" in Italian—still has adult appeal: Milanese mainstay Carlo Contin bolted its leather sling to the underside of an ash frame for a free-swinging seat. ($2,000)
