Rules of Style: Lot78's Ollie Amhurst

London-based designer Ollie Amhurst's start in fashion was not what you'd call glamorous. His first job? Working in the stockroom of an Armani store. But from these humble beginnings Amhurst rose through Armani's ranks to run European sales for the Italian fashion giant. In 2008, he left the brand and founded his own company, Lot78, a men's and women's luxury streetwear line now sold worldwide.

DETAILS caught up with Amhurst to get his take on the importance of good T-shirts, the proper fit of a leather jacket, and why you should read The Fountainhead.

1. Invest in a beautiful watch. It should be a more classic piece but should always reflect your own style. It's something you will treasure and pass down.

2. Find a T-shirt that fits you well and then buy five in white, five in blue, and five in anthracite. A great T-shirt with the perfect fit for your body type is a staple piece and well-worth having several of, as the perfect tee will never go out of style.

3. When buying a leather jacket make sure it's slightly fitted as leather will always stretch. The perfect leather jacket will always get better with age and wear.

4. Feel comfortable with your own style. Never force a piece of clothing or an accessory that you feel is not completely "you." You never want to feel out of your skin or like an item is wearing you. You'll look best and exude confidence when you feel your best, even if you're wearing the simplest things, like your favorite T-shirt and jeans.

5. I always give this piece of advice when you feel you're having an issue with another person that's not worth your time: "Don't let people live rent-free in your mind."

6. Read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. It's a seminal book that exemplifies individuality and the power that comes with thinking for yourself. Plus, it's just a damn good read!

7. Put your mind to something challenging that you have always wanted to accomplish and then do it. I've had the most amazing experiences and some of the greatest rewards completing five-day cycle rides. It's a beautiful hardship and a boundary-pushing physical experience, but well worth it.

8. Get a suit tailor-made. You will never look back.
