The Rise of the Celebrity-Owned Gym

Celebrities aren't just hitting the gyms anymore. They're owning them.

Sure, fitness has always been the bedrock of the red carpet's hot bodies, but more and more stars are opening fitness studios by themselves, with their friends, or with the trainers who helped them score their A-list bodies in the first place. Some are even instructing classes.

Check out the celeb-owned gyms where a paparazzi-worthy body can be yours for the price of membership. Who knows, you might even rub (toned) shoulders with the stars while you're there.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Tracy Anderson Method Flagship Studio

In April, People's 2013 Most Beautiful Woman partnered with her trainer Tracy Anderson to open the members-only Tracy Anderson Method Flagship Studio in Brentwood, California. The 8,500-square-foot Windsor Smith-designed space boasts training rooms that are calibrated for optimal fat-burning temps and furnished with weights, hoops, poles, and Anderson's trademark ceiling-suspended bands.

Sean Patrick Flanery, Dynamix Martial Arts

Best known for his role in cult-classic movie The Boondock Saints, the actor, who most recently played an ex-cop in the final season of "Dexter," teaches and trains in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at his Los Angeles mixed martial arts studio. With a roster of instructors that includes UFC and Soviet champions, Dynamix draws celebrities such as Guy Ritchie to the mat.

Our Lady Peace, Union

Recently, band members Raine Maida, Jeremy Taggart, and Duncan Coutts opened a boutique fitness studio in their former Toronto rehearsal space after noise complaints forced them to take their sound equipment elsewhere. Now, the space is a haven for cycling TRX and barre aficionados, who can take classes choreographed by Heather Ogden, principal dancer of the National Ballet of Canada.

Nichelle Hines, Cycle House

When the Hollywood writers' strike hit, actress Nichelle Hines started spending more time in the gym. Now, while she's back to work on shows such as "NCIS: Los Angeles," "Scandal," and "Parenthood," she's also working as part-owner and chief ride officer at Cycle House in West Hollywood. The altruistic spinning studio forgoes plastic and paper, opting instead for purified alkaline water in reusable bottles and schedules written on chalkboards and posted online. And for each ride a member takes, the gym's Take 1/Give 2 program donates two meals to U.S. families in need.

James Denton, Bring It! Studios

After "Desperate Housewives" ended, James Denton (a.k.a plumber Mike) moved to Chanhassen, Minnesota with his wife, fitness expert (and Minnesotan), Erin O'Brien. Between landing ads for French fashion house Daniel Hechter and acting in local plays, Denton can now be spotted helping his wife with their Bring It! Studios and its subsidiary Chanhassen Crossfit, which specializes in group cardio, fusion, and mind-body classes.

Tamra Barney, C.U.T. Fitness

Take our word for it, the "Real Housewives of Orange County" star is not someone you want to cross. While she's best known for her sharp tongue, her body's equally chiseled. In March, she opened group fitness gym, C.U.T. (Cardio Unique Training), in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. The 6,300-square-foot facility's three studios host a range of classes from Body Pump to kickboxing. Barney, who got her start at LA Fitness as teenager, is now certified in Body Pump and teaches some classes at the gym.

Hank Baskett, PerformanceGaines

The former wide receiver teamed up with NFL trainer Travelle Gaines to open PerformanceGaines in West Hollywood. The gym focuses on performance over pounds on a scale; its pillars include team strength and conditioning, cardiovascular, maintenance, and corrective programs. It even hosts seminars and workshops to help members hone their technique and nutrition.

Freddie Roach, Peter Berg, and Garry Shandling, Wild Card West Boxing Gym

Executive producer of HBO's "On Freddie Roach," Peter Berg (who is also behind Lone Survivor, Battleship, and Friday Night Lights) recently revamped and renamed his and comedian Garry Shandling's boxing club. Along with the lightweight boxing legend and trainer, the plan is to take Roach's famed Hollywood gym, Wild Card Boxing Club, international. For now, Berg is focused on the Santa Monica (aka West) location, where knockout clients ranging from champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez to Liev Schreiber, star of Showtime's "Ray Donovan," can regularly be found sparring.
