Model in the Spotlight: Broderick Hunter

In our ongoing series, Model in the Spotlight, we get up close and personal with the world's leading male models.

You'd be hard pressed to find a sweeter guy than Broderick Hunter. When he isn't busy with his blossoming career, he's playing basketball to stay in shape (can you believe he claims he never goes to the gym?) and mentoring young children. Who said models can't be more than a pretty face?

Age: 22

Height: 6'2"

Hometown: Fontana, California

Agency: Soul Artist Management (New York), D'Management (Milan), Wilhelmina (Miami), Chosen Models (Chicago), LA Models and NTA (Los Angeles)

How were you discovered? When I was on Facebook late one night a photographer named Tyren Redd reached out to me saying, "I don't know if anyone's ever told you, but you should be a model." I was kind of shocked and felt weird about it because I come from a long background of playing basketball. Not only was this new to me, but I also thought it was uncommon. I thought about it and ended up taking his photo-shoot offer because I figured it'd be a cool experience.

After I got the shots back I immediately threw them on my Facebook page. Days later I ended up on blogs and other social media sites and was so confused because I didn't think I was that good. I said to myself, "hmm, maybe we've got something here." I shot with Tyren a few more times and months after that, I quit playing basketball and made the decision to pursue modeling.

After about a year of being in the business on my own, I approached [modeling agent] Michael Maddox via Facebook about a casting he had posted. I submitted him my pictures and he liked me, so he offered to take over my career. I did some research and saw he managed quite a few successful people, so I took the offer and he placed me in all of the wonderful agencies I'm currently with.

We hear you mentor children. What have you found most rewarding about that experience? I'm working on starting a small organization where we reach out to kids that don't have someone to talk to. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youths between the ages of 10 and 24. I'm a strong believer that if you can simply relate and talk to this generation then we can prevent many kids from joining gangs, getting caught up in drug and alcohol, and from committing suicide. I love speaking to these kids and getting others involved. Knowing you helped them and they're walking with their head high is a rewarding experience.

Any pre-show or pre-shoot rituals? I always pray and thank God for the new blessing and opportunity, whether it's being on set for a photo-shoot, runway, or whatever—I always pray first. Then, I get my mind right to better understand the concept and do my best to deliver. I might hop scotch, squeeze in a few sit-ups, and do jumping jacks before my underwear shots.

The craziest thing you've ever been asked to model:This one time, early on in my career, a guy asked me to be the face of his new "duct tape underwear" line. As a guy, you would understand my concern with the project. As much as I enjoy wrapping my lower abdomen in duct tape, I didn't want to be a part of it. Good luck to that gentleman, though.

If you weren't a model, what would you be doing? I'd probably join the National Double Dutch League and show off my footwork. I'm joking. I'd most likely still be pursuing basketball and studying physical therapy. Basketball was always my passion and physical therapy was something that I was really interested in. But if I go back to school, I don't think I'd study therapy. I'd probably end up studying something more on the technology or business end.

Your go-to off-duty outfit: Jeans, any color plain T-shirt, and some Chucks or Nike Roshe Runs. I'm very basic when it comes to my off-duty wardrobe. You can find me at any local clearance and discount rack.

How do you stay in shape? I have a confession to make: I don't work out. You'll never catch me on a weight bench or a treadmill. Basketball is my only workout. Don't get me wrong, I might do a few sit-ups or a light jog every now and again, but it's definitely not a routine. I try to eat right and drink a gallon of water a day.

What's your grooming routine? For my skin, I use St. Ive's Apricot Scrub and Kiehl's toner and moisturizer. I've recently become a fan of Kiehl's skincare products.

If you could change one thing about your body, it would be: I wish I could change my foot size. Do you know how hard it is to find a size 13 when you see a really cool shoe?! It's so frustrating! Sometimes I don't even ask the clerk if they have my size just to save myself from utter embarrassment or disappointment. Not to mention every time I do a photo shoot I have to squeeze these boats into anything between a 9.5-11, maybe a 12 on a good day, but that's still painful. You do what you've got to do though.

Best piece of advice you've ever been given? Don't stop trying. Always look for ways to be better. Listen more than you speak and don't stop believing in yourself. Just keep moving and watch the blessings unfold.
