Just Say No to Bad Winter Hair: 4 Anti-Flake, Frizz-Free, and Hat-Head-Be-Gone Solutions

Winter—and the harsh weather that comes with it—is your hair's worst enemy. From pulling beanies on and off to drastic temperature changes (going from cold and dry outside to hot and dry indoors), your hair and scalp are going to take a beating this season. But there are a few ways to fend off frizz, flakes, and static electricity.

Fight Frizz
To help your hair retain the essential moisture that prevents frizz and keeps hair from turning into a dry, brittle mess, make sure you're using a hydrating conditioner (like Apivita Conditioner for Dry Hair). It contains nourishing ingredients like almond and olive fruit oils, honey, and rosemary extract to soften and smooth dry strands. Massage the conditioner into your hair and then be patient—it'll need a good five minutes to work its magic.

Cut the Static
If Einstein's not who you look to for hair inspiration, put an end to static frizz by rubbing a dryer sheet inside your wool hat to cut the charge of the fibers. And always choose a hat made of natural fibers like wool, cotton, or cashmere; synthetics aren't breathable and can irritate your scalp.

Fend Off Flakes
Don't wait till you see those telltale white flakes on your shoulders. Prevent dandruff with a shampoo that uses amino acids to balance the scalp and banish flakes. We like Malin + Goetz Peppermint Shampoo, which contains natural peppermint extract to soothe and cool an itchy scalp. And while a hot shower feels great on a winter day, it'll strip the moisture from your hair and head. Use lukewarm water to rinse and keep your scalp happy.

Style for the Season
If you're a guy who normally uses a styling gel, consider switching to a grooming cream for winter. Gels can dry out hair and are harsh on the scalp, while a cream will help control frizz and static without stripping out moisture. A water-soluble styling product is also more pliable for that moment when the hat comes off and you need to quickly erase evidence of hat hair with just your fingers. Try Jack Black Sleek Finish Texture Cream—it has long-lasting, flexible control and fights frizz. For an even stronger hold and a matte finish, use a smidgen of Imperial Barber Products Matte Pomade Paste.
