By the Numbers: Swatting—the Celebrity Prank of the Year

Swatting, a high-stakes prank in which phone hackers persuade a 911 operator to send first responders (bomb squads, firefighters, armed police officers) to a place where no emergency exists, reached critical mass this past year when the homes of celebrities became targets.

2: Number of times Miley Cyrus has been swatted—first in August 2012, then again in May.

12: Age of the Southern California resident who was brought up on felony charges for swatting Ashton Kutcher and Justin Bieber.

15: Number of SWAT-team officers—plus three helicopters—dispatched to Bruce and Kris Jenner's home in January.

6: Number of A-list celebrities (Sean Combs, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Selena Gomez, Russell Brand, and Ryan Seacrest) whose houses were swatted in an eight-day window in early April.

2: Number of lingerie-clad women found with Corey Feldman during a 2 a.m. swatting incident in September.

10K: Dollar amount of the penalty (along with up to a year in jail) faced by convicted swatters or their parents under a new California law, which takes effect on January 1.
