My Healthy Essentials: Michael Bastian

With an eponymous luxury line, a CFDA award for 2011's Menswear Designer of the Year, and a much-beloved collection for Gant, designer Michael Bastian has every tool imaginable to make a man look his best. Except, of course, he can only do so much.

"I work in an industry that places a huge value on how you look, but if you feel rotten inside it will always show on the outside," says Bastian. "If you feel good, you will look good. Your clothes can only hide so much." To that end, the NYC-based designer works with a personal trainer at Equinox Greenwich Avenue twice a week—a practice as integral to his body as it is to his success in every other arena. "Without your health, everything else in your life is compromised and diminished to a certain degree." Here, Bastian shares the tools keeping him on track.

Breakfast: A banana with almond butter
"Personally I'm not a big breakfast guy, but this is easy to manage even if you're rushing out the door."

SmartWater
"I get the biggest bottle and keep it around all day. Being hydrated makes everything function better and even helps with jet lag. I also have a family history of kidney stones, so that's another reason to keep drinking all day."

N.O.-XPLODE Powder
"It's like a big cup of coffee before a workout, but tastes better and lasts longer."

MB fleece gym shorts
"I have a hard time finding gym shorts that aren't too long or baggy or over logo-ed, so I really like the fleece ones we make in our own line. I've always thought that would be a great spin-off of our business—gym, swim and bodywear for guys. Seems to me like there could be a market there."

Save Khaki T-shirts
"The Save Khaki guys have really perfected the plain simple crew neck tee—they're the right weight, the sleeve hits at the right spot and the washed out colors are great."

Asics running shoes
"These are my favorites at the moment—just as they were in high school."

Sea salt body scrub + bath
"A good rough scrub helps in a lot of ways—knocks off the dead skin, gets your blood moving, relaxes your muscles. Add a nice long bath with The New Yorker and that is my idea of a great Sunday night."

Lots of sleep
"You can't really overestimate how much this makes a difference in how you look, feel and perform. It's tough keeping up with your sleep when you travel a lot (I can't sleep on a plane), so I always try to get to a new country at least a day early to get normal before diving into meetings. A friend of mine says the best cure for jet lag is a good run followed by a long steam and I'm beginning to think he's right."
