Swiss Artist Olaf Breuning Came to NY for a Girl and Stayed for the City—Now See His Central Park Cloud Installation

A regular series in partnership with FolioCue that introduces you to a new need-to-know artist each week and where you can see his or her work next.

Swiss-born, New York-based Olaf Breuning didn't become an art fanatic until his father gave him a camera when he was 16. Since then, he's been busily producing work with an eclectic, irreverent sense of humor, but Breuning has no interest in "fun art," as he calls it. Like any artist, his ultimate goal is to produce seriously considered pieces that bring something new to the table, both visually and conceptually.

Here's what you need to know about him:

  • His Cloud installation (supported by New York's Public Art Fund) is currently on view at the entrance of Central Park at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
  • The city of Zurich gave Olaf a studio in Soho, New York. He fell in love with a woman and in love with the city. The woman left, the city stayed.
  • His work is included in the permanent collections of Centre Pompidou in Paris, The Saatchi Gallery and Zabludowicz Collection in London, AROS in Aarus, Denmark, and the Burger Collection in Berlin, among many others.
