If there's one thing Christopher Brosius, the rogue perfumer behind cult fragrance label CB I Hate Perfume, has never caved in to, it's trends. "I don't care what others in the business are doing," Brosius says. "I've always focused on what I'm doing and what my clients want." Case in point: Some of the brand's most beguiling offerings include Burning Leaves (think fall foliage gone up in smoke) and In the Library (pictured, below right), which re-creates the oddly comforting and nostalgic scent of well-loved books.
To commemorate the brand's 10th anniversary, and to keep in line with his nonconformist philosophy, Brosius sought to create something truly original and exceptionally luxurious, an item that would make even the most dedicated fragrance collector swoon—just in case the $6,500 price tag doesn't. The result is "The Box."
Resembling a coffee-table book, "The Box" is meticulously made-to-order and hand-assembled and takes four to six weeks from start to finish (patience is key). It houses all 40 of CB's ready-to-wear perfumes in special vials and is accompanied by handsomely bound booklets that tell the story of each scent. "This special-edition item serves both form and function," Brosius says. "The packaging aesthetic fits what we've done over the years, and the signing and numbering"—which he does by hand—"makes it as personal as each scent memory is."
To those raising their brows at the price, Brosius contends that it "actually isn't high. When you break it down, it's merely what the retail would be for each bottle separately, plus the cost of the box materials." He also notes that "The Box" was created with a very specific person in mind. "It's a special item for a true fragrance collector, fan, and aficionado." Not luxurious enough for you? Then order "The Box" with "Rare Flowers," a series of six floral essential oils for a mere $4,000 more.
