From Couturier to Hotelier: Karl Lagerfeld's Latest Design Project

What does a man with too many houses do? He builds a hotel, of course.

Karl Lagerfeld's tireless passion for creating things that aren't clothes knows no bounds, and now the fashion designer is taking on the design of a 270-room hotel in Macau, China.

The Kaiser signed on for the project just a day after his grocery-store themed Fall 2014 Chanel show in Paris and recently disclosed his design inspiration to WWD, noting that the venue's decor will be "kind of 19th-century style, but I want it modern at the same time." The hotel, part of a 20-story tower in Macau's Lisboa Palace development, is set to open in 2017.

Lagerfeld added that he's approaching the project "like my own houses and apartments, but I have more houses than I need, and I don't want to do any more. So I can get rid of my frustration by doing hotels."

The man must have a lot of frustration. Just last year he redesigned the pool and exterior of Monaco's Hotel Metropole. He's in good company, too. Hotel design has been a popular outlet for fashion designers; the list also includes Christian Lacroix and Diane von Furstenberg.

But with Lagerfeld, one side project is never enough. On Friday he unveiled the packaging design and ad campaign for his eponymous new men's and women's fragrances, which go on sale this month.
