Rules of Style: Ben Minkoff's Uri Minkoff

"I see a lot of guys that still carry oversized messenger bags. Unless you're actually a bike messenger, this is not a good look."

Named in honor of their WWII pilot and travel enthusiast grandfather, siblings Rebecca and Uri Minkoff launched the Ben Minkoff men's accessories line in 2011 as an offshoot of Rebecca's well-established brand. On the heels of his spring collection debut as designer and creative director, Uri chats with us about how to pick the perfect bag, his argument for the man pouch, and what two questions to always ask yourself when honing your personal style.

1. Invest in smart and slimming pieces that will never go out of style. A pair of dark denim, a form-fitting white button up, and a slim navy blazer are some key investment pieces. You can easily dress them up or down depending on the occasion.

2. Stripes are always a great pattern to experiment with because you can be as bold or as subtle as you like. I personally like to wear patterns in small touches, like my socks or a tie.

3. Make smart decisions when it comes to the bags you carry. I see a lot of guys that still carry oversized messenger bags. Unless you're actually a bike messenger, this is not a good look. Bags for guys are an essential these days, especially if you live in an urban area like NYC, where you commute. That being said, choose a sleek bag that makes sense for your daily needs. The bag should be slim with clean lines, yet be able to house any devices being carried. I think men should also focus on carrying less and avoiding clutter.

4. I'm a huge proponent of the man pouch. It's an easy, cool way to carry all of your essentials. I carry the Ben Minkoff Jerry every day—it fits everything I need without weighing me down. To be able to carry my phone, business cards, iPad mini, keys, charging cord, gloves in the winter in a slim and compact pouch is essential.

5. Visit Tokyo. I fly frequently for work and find myself constantly inspired by the colors and fresh attitude about style there. There's a great and liberal use of color in men's attire there that's very inspiring.

6. I recommend using Kiehl's Ultra Face Moisturizer, I don't leave the house without it.

7. Be true to yourself: what do you like and what works for you? Ask yourself these questions as a base for your personal style. The key is to be stylish, but also you. Also, don't be afraid to try new things and experiment. It shows confidence.

8. I don't wear watches because I like to keep my accessories as minimal as possible. The only accessory that I carry on my body on a day-to-day basis is my wedding ring.

9. Always splurge on good shoes and outerwear. Both are important style elements that will carry you far in life.
